Who Pays For What? | St. Simons Island Wedding Planner

There are no hard fast rules regarding who pays for what in a wedding. The list I have compiled below indicates the traditional only. It is recommended that the bride and groom should meet with both sets of parents to discuss who will pay for what.  This should be done at the beginning of the wedding planning to determine a realistic budget and exactly who will be responsible for which expenses so there are no misunderstandings later.


  • Groom’s wedding ring
  • Groom’s wedding gift
  • Bridal attendants and flower girl gifts
  • Personal stationery
  • Bridesmaids’ luncheon
  • Accommodations for out-of-town bridal attendants
  • Physical examination/blood test (if necessary)


  • Bride’s ring(s)
  • Bride’s wedding gift
  • Marriage license
  • Groomsmen, ushers, best man, and ring bearer gifts
  • Groom’s wedding attire
  • Bride’s bouquet, mother’s flowers, groom’s, groomsmen, & ushers boutonnieres
  • Accommodations for out-of-town groom attendants
  • Physical exam/blood test (if necessary)
  • Groomsmen gloves, ties or ascots
  • Clergy fee
  • Honeymoon
  • Bachelor party


  • Their own wedding attire
  • Bride’s wedding attire/trousseau
  • Wedding reception, including all food, beverages, wedding cake, gratuities for the bartenders and waiters, decorations, music, flowers, etc.
  • Wedding gift for bride and groom
  • Wedding invitations, announcements, calligraphy, and mailing costs
  • Engagement, bridal, wedding, reception photography and videography
  • Wedding ceremony, including location rental, musician fees, aisle runner, tent or canopy, flowers, and decorations
  • Flowers for bridesmaids, maid of honor, flower girl, grandparents, etc.
  • Fees for directing traffic as well as parking costs and coat-check fees
  • Wedding favors and accessories
  • Transportation for bridal party to the wedding ceremony and from ceremony to reception
  • Wedding Planner/Consultant fee
  • Rehearsal dinner, only if the groom’s parents are not hosting one



  • Their own wedding attire (Father of the Groom should match Father of the Bride)
  • Their own travel and lodging expenses
  • Wedding gift for bride and groom
  • Rehearsal dinner and any other wedding expenses they decide to help out with
